Report: iPhone Sales Soar Following U.K. Price Cuts

Whether the point was to reinvigorate lackluster sales or clear inventory for that new 3-G model, it appears the £100 iphone price cuts announced last week in the U.K. are having the desired effect. Mobile Today reports that recent store checks reveal iPhones are moving off the shelves “like [it was] launch day again.” In fact, some 02 retail stores in London, Newcastle and Birmingham completely sold out of the phones on the first day the price cuts were announced. Similarly, Carphone Warehouse says that sales have more than doubled since the discounts went into effect.

Me, I’m interested in seeing what happens to prices once the 3-G version hits stores. Could we see a $300 8GB iPhone this summer?

Geek Watch: Keyboard Pants

Make your friends jealous! Impress girls! Have your own unique style! All of these things could be yours with one pair of keyboard pants. So cool are these pants, that they don’t even require a belt. They simply prop themselves up with awesomeness.

Built into these duds is a keyboard, knee speakers, mouse slot and a joystick built into the crotch (I’m not making this up). So in regards to what I said before, about making friends jealous and impressing girls, yea, none of that was true. You’ll have your own style, but its level of acceptance will be somewhere on par with Napoleon Dynamite.

Dan Khasis, Cto, Oosah

[Web 2.0] Today, Oosah was launched (and we published about it), so tonight they are celebrating at the Sir Francis Hotel, in San Francisco. I finally met the CTO, Dan Khasis, who told me that he is pretty happy with the launch: They got good feedback and some good traffic.

Fancy brain scans can detect when the mind wanders

by Paul Miller, posted Apr 22nd 2008 at 11:35AM
What were we talking about again? Oh, that’s right. Brains. Wonderful, delicious… brains. A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that researchers can track grey matter for the patterns that precede careless errors. Apparently there’s a a detectable activity shift when your brain switches to auto pilot — which can happen as much as half a minute before you screw up. The hope behind the research is to be able to track brain activity and alert users who are headed off the tracks. The technology could reduce work slip-ups, improve driving, or at least help you know when to take a nap or switch activities to keep engaged. But seriously, what were we just talking about?

Look for the G600 this May as we said for about £349.99 ($693).

A keyboard with connections - Kensington Ci70

There’s no such thing as too many shoes or USB Ports. Kensington can’t help with the first, but does have the brilliant new Ci70 which has two easy-access USB 2.0 ports for quick connection to cameras, MP3 players, thumb drives, etc. See that built-in mini USB connector with cable? Just plug in your camera or phone and start downloading those photos for your Facebook page.

With a 35% smaller footprint and low-profile design, it saves on desk space and, they say, “reduces clutter,” though I haven’t seen a difference in my pile of post-it notes, press releases, iphone cases . . . maybe the next version will organize my desk? Vacuum?

There are five keyboard hot keys for instant access to mail, media, and search, and media keys offer volume control, track control, play and pause. I like the soft-touch keys which provide a nice, responsive touch, but what really sets this apart are the USB ports and mini-USB connector.

PC and Mac compatible. Approx. $49.99 at Kensington or pre-order for from Amazon.

eBay is bringing its Live Auction service to the deadpool

eBay will be shutting down its live auction service by the end of 2008. The move is part of eBay’s latest move to try and recreate its own business model. For those who are not familiar with eBay Live Auctions, the service is similar to your traditional auctions but the Live Auctions last until there are no longer any people bidding for the item. Unlike eBay’s regular online auction which has a set time frame before the auction expires. Winning bidders also paid a premium of 12.5 or 15-percent based on the final bid. The decision to shut down Live Auctions was announced amidst the cry of several hundreds of eBay sellers who participate in the Live Auctions. Well, at least they can always go back to putting their items up for bid at eBay’s regular online auction service.

Seagate: 1 billion drives served

by Paul Miller, posted Apr 22nd 2008 at 10:25AM
Seagate claims it’s the first company to hit the magical “one billion drives shipped” mark, and doesn’t plan on slowing down any time soon. The company was founded in 1979, with its first drive offering up 5MB of storage for a whopping $1,500. We’ve certainly come a long way in 29 years, and Seagate expects to ship its next billion drives in less than five years. Of course, with all this “cloud computing” talk we’d think drive sales have to slow down at some point, but there’s certainly no sign of our GB appetites abating just yet. Now if you’ll excuse us, we need to download this 7GB MMO demo to a secondary hard drive.

Twelve 5-9 Wristwatch - Q version

If you’re into strange-shaped watches that feature top-notch technology, I guess you already know the Twelve 5-9, Q Version?

If you’re not familiar with it, the next paragraph describes the working mode:

A single touch of the button sparks a brief animation of lights before the time is displayed. A second touch of the button skips this function, presenting the time instantly.

The time is displayed via LED lights that have different colors - green, red, yellow - and each LED line represents an hour/minute. The Twelve 5-9 Q Version is available in silver, or gunmetal.

Priced at 77.
