Asus has unveiled plans to include touchscreens in the next generation of the Eee PC. These will be included in the Eee PC 900 which will feature the 8.9-inch display, and is sound like these updates will make most current Eee PC owners just a little jealous.
According to Kevin Lin, who is the vice president of Asustek’s sales department the new Eee PC’s will feature touchscreen panels and possibly include GPS support. In addition to the touchscreen and GPS, the new lineup will also see a boost in both memory and storage. The standard RAM will be 1GB as opposed to the current 512MB and the storage will go up from the current 4-8GB to 8-12GB’s.
The new Eee PC’s are expected to begin shipping in May or June and retail for around $500. Asus also has plans to ship their previously announced E-DT desktop model around the same May or June timeframe, which is expected to retail for $199.

Super Talent has launched the world’s slimmest 256GB solid state drive (SSD) – the FSD56GC25H. This new SSD aside from having a really long model number is only 12.5mm (0.49-inches) thick, making it the thinnest among the crop of SSDs available on the market today.
Aside from its thin dimension, Super Talent still managed to adhere to the industry standard 2.5-inch hard drive form factor. These standards include SATA-I interface and 100% interchangeability with conventional 2.5-inch SATA HD. It also sports Super Talent’s patented stacking technology in storing data files. The FSD56GC25H (whew!) drive also supports 0.1ms access time, 65MB/sec sequential read speed and 50MB/sec sequential write speed. It supports up to 1600G of shock and 16G of vibration, making it five times greater than normal hard drives.
Super Talent also made sure that the users data is well protected from internal and external factors. The FSD56GC25H has ECC support, bad bit management firmware and patented wear leveling technology. Hence, this SSD should give users extreme reliability and endurance.
“We designed this drive for applications that need rugged and reliable storage in a very compact form factor. This is the world’s smallest and thinnest 256GB SSD”, said Super Talent Marketing Director, Joe James.
The FSD56GC25H was designed for military and industrial market to be used for avionics, video on demand, ATM, factory automation machines, POS terminals among other usages. Pricing for this SSD is available upon request, which means that it is priced out of the reach for most.

We’ve learned to be extra cautious whenever some company tosses out that “world’s thinnest” claim, and while this one isn’t an outright lie, it’s not exactly as impressive as Super Talent would have you believe. Yeah, the outfit’s 256GB FSD56GC25H SSD actually is the slimmest on the market today at this capacity, but the 12.5-millimeter height makes it incompatible with a slew of laptops that can only handle drives that are 9.5-millimeters thick. Nevertheless, those with the room to spare can look forward to 0.1-millisecond access times, 65MB/sec sequential read speeds and 50MB/sec sequential write speeds (maximums), and a lightweight aluminum enclosure. Per usual, pricing information is available only upon request — but no, it won’t be cheap.

With all these names, it seems that Intel’s latest offering is similar to the Everex Cloudbook, which has had multiple variations (and names) depending on where in the world it was being released. The latest info on the Intel ultra-portable is that it is being called the Smartbook. Of course this comes just a short while after we saw those official looking press style pics and spec sheet for the 2go PC, which was a nice follow up to those cell phone style images that we saw of the Netbook (aka: Eco PC) a few weeks back.
So are we talking about one notebook here, with one name, or a lineup? The latest information is claiming that the Smartbook has been released by FTEC in Malaysia and is aimed at the less-than-familiar computer user, meaning kids and older adults. There are two models available for the Smartbook; the cheaper of the two will feature a 7-inch display, Celeron processor, 512MB RAM, 40GB hard drive, USB 2.0, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g and water-resistant keyboard and will retail for around $377. The more expensive model will include a 9-inch display, built-in webcam and have a much smaller, but more sturdy 2GB SSD instead of the standard 40GB hard drive and will retail for around $409. Both models will come pre-installed with Linux, but also offers an option for Windows XP, which is just an extra $31.
So it looks like we do indeed have the Netbook, the Eco PC, the 2go PC and the Smartbook, but what its called seems to be based on where you live as they all seem to be essentially the same notebooks.

As much as I can’t stand that Extreme Makeover: Home Edition show, I wouldn’t mind if Ty and his buddies came to my house and whipped it into shape with a few sledgehammers and new furniture.
There is one thing that I never see the Extreme Makeover team do: connect all electronic devices in the household together, seamlessly. In other words, all the electronic devices (TV, PC, etc.) are all wired or shared together seamlessly in a true Digital Home Makeover.
It appears that Microsoft wants to fill that homeowner’s need with the launching of their Digital Home Makeover Contest. To enter, you have to make a video of yourself creatively explaining why you need a Digital Home Makeover.
If you win, your dream will come true, and Microsoft will come to your door. They will then apply their Windows Media Center and Extenders for Windows Media Center to make your home completely connected. By connected, I mean that every room will have full access to your digital material.
If you are drooling over this, you had better hurry and make your video, submit it here, and enter by April 18. You won’t have to wait too long to see if you won, because the winner will be announced on April 30.

3G reviews the Sony Ericsson W580i and writes, “The W580i harbours a standard mid-range two-megapixel camera, woefully deprived of autofocus, Macro focus for close-ups and any type of flash. You can muck around with white balance, shoots modes and effects, but really it won’t mask the average picture quality blighted by soft focus around the fringes. Similarly video capture shoots in a judder-tastic but YouTube fit 176×144 pixel resolution.”

Meet the Nokia 3110 Evolve, shown off at Green gadgets forum in NYC is slated to arrive in Europe later this year. Company representatives say no plans have been made to introduce this in the US. And why would they?
Sure a billion mobile phones dumped into consumers pockets last year means a lot of waste, especially if those phones don’t contain the 50% recycled material cover like that of the 3110 Evolve. To boot, over 60% of the Evolve can be turned back into other products. These sound like things us Americans would have issues with, no?
The Evolve will feature Nokia’s smart power charger that reported uses 94% less power than the Energy Star requirements. This one-two punch from Nokia could make it the first real “smartphone”. Come on Nokia, announce plans for this at CTIA huh?

Western Digital has announced My Passport Elite, a new portable hard drive which is available in a 250BG and 350GB storage capacity. WD is touting this new portable hard drive as easy to grip, comfortable to hold and a beautiful device to show off to your friends. But the best part perhaps of this new portable hard drive is its size which is small enough to fit in one’s pocket.
Could you imagine yourself having 320GB of photos, audio and video files inside your pocket? Even more absurd and yet useful is the fact that you can carry it anywhere you go and plug it into any compatible PC and laptop anytime, anywhere? That’s definitely putting a lot of value to the price you have to pay for a nifty little device such as the WD Passport Elite. That price is actually $169.99 for the 250GB and $199.99 for the 350GB. If you have the budget, you can get both and have a massive 600GB of storage capacity.
The WD My Passport Elite comes in four color variants - bronze, titanium, Westminster blue and the sweet looking cherry red. The portable hard drive offers a soft-touch finish and weighs less than 5 ounces. So you would definitely not get tired from carrying it around. WD even made it sweeter by including a capacity gauge that displays how much space is still available.
And the goodies keep on getting better, with a pre-installed Windows-only backup and synchronization software, gaming console support, USB bus-powered and Google search software for searching and managing through files stored in the hard disk.
